This month, SCANA Energy donated $5,000 to Hands On Atlanta, a non-profit that matches volunteers in Atlanta with organizations in need. Hands On Atlanta will use SCANA’s donation to support Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K). In addition to the donation, SCANA Energy employees will head to Free Bikes 4 Kidz later this month to help fix up bikes.

Hands On Atlanta was started by Elise Eplan, who was having trouble finding time to volunteer with her work schedule. She partnered with 11 acquaintances to support an organization’s needs. Rather than one person trying to fill every commitment, they joined together and sent whoever was available to help. As they invited others to join, their number grew from 12 to 60 before eventually growing so large they needed to hire someone to run the organization. Today, there are tens of thousands of volunteers who trust Hands On Atlanta to aid them with civic engagement.

Free Bikes 4 Kidz provides bikes to children in need to help them “ride into a happier, healthier childhood.” FB4K cleans and refurbishes bikes donated by the public before giving them away to those who need them most. They work with various community partners, like Atlanta Public Schools, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and International Rescue Committee, to match bikes with the perfect recipient.
